In early December this year, officials of the Department of Environmental Protection, after receiving a report from hunters of a dead roe deer found in a snare in Krygelis Forest, Kazlų Rūda Municipality, promptly went to the specified location. The information that the male roe deer had been hunted in a prohibited manner using snares to catch wild animals was confirmed. The person will have to pay EUR 2 041 for the illegal hunting of the roe deer and will be liable to administrative charges for damage to wildlife resources.

Kaunas wildlife officers launched an investigation and during an ambush on 7 December, a resident of a neighbouring village was arrested at midday. He had taken a male roe deer out of the snare and was preparing to transport it. The person confessed to setting up two snares in the animals' paths. The second snare was found nearby.

This person is known to officers and has been arrested for illegal use of snares in the past.

Lashes used to trap wild animals are not only illegal, but also cause great suffering to the animals – the animal becomes distracted and circles around trying to get free before it eventually dies.

The use of prohibited tools carries a fine of between €600 and €1,700, as well as the confiscation of the nooses and the need to pay compensation for the damage caused to the wildlife resources – €2,041.20.
