Curonian Spit in the Curonian Lagoon not due to disease

The Department of Environmental Protection has received the results of investigations into carcasses that died in the lagoon. No disease specific to crucian carp has been found.  

On 17 April, the Department of Environmental Protection received a report of a mass die-off of crucian carp in the Curonian Lagoon, to which officials of the Department of Environmental Protection responded immediately by searching the Curonian Lagoon and observed crucian carp carcasses in various locations on both the western and eastern shores of the lagoon. 

Environmental officers have launched an investigation. Experts from the National Institute for Food and Veterinary Risk Assessment have examined the fish for possible diseases. The Environmental Protection Agency took water samples.  

On 24 April, the results of the tests were received. The dead crucian carp did not suffer from any disease specific to their species.  

The investigation into the situation continues. The municipalities of Klaipėda city, Klaipėda district, Šilutė and Neringa have been informed to remove the dead fish. The information has also been forwarded to the State Food and Veterinary Service.
