Advice from florists on how to enjoy tulip blossoms for longer
Spring is here, and with it comes one of the most anticipated flowering seasons, with tulips about to burst into bloom in gardens and flowerbeds. Although their flowering is often short-lived, experts point out that proper care can extend it considerably and help to maintain the spectacular spring display for longer.
According to the florists at Pakruojis Manor, one of the most important aspects is moderation and attention to the natural needs of the plant. Tulips do not like soil that is either too dry or too wet, so they should be watered regularly in spring, but avoid waterlogging. Equally important is the location – these flowers do best in sunny, sheltered areas where they can get enough light and warmth from strong winds.
Soil also has a big influence on flowering time. Loose, well-drained soil conditions allow the bulbs to develop in a healthy way, and it is recommended to amend the soil with compost or sand if necessary. Tulips can also be lightly fertilised in the spring when the first seedlings appear – a well-chosen fertiliser strengthens the plants and helps the flowers to last longer. In addition, florists advise you to pay attention to a few less obvious but very important aspects of care. One of these is mulching the soil. A thin layer of natural mulch helps to retain moisture, protect against temperature fluctuations and reduce weed growth. It is also important to regularly loosen the surface of the soil, as this allows the roots to "breathe" better and strengthens the plant.Another important point is the removal of dead flowers. Removing the over-bloomed flowers means that the plant does not waste energy on seed formation and spends more energy on strengthening the bulb. However, the leaves should not be touched and should dry naturally to allow the plant to prepare for the next season.
Experts also recommend digging up the bulbs and replanting them every few years. This helps to avoid soil degradation, disease build-up and ensures more flowers in the future. It is important to store the bulbs in a dry, well-ventilated place until the next planting season.
According to experts, today there is an increasing emphasis on the experiential and not just the aesthetic aspect of flowers – tulips are seen as a living process that changes daily. This is the approach that is also reflected in Pakruojis Manor Park, where the Tulip and Spring Flower Festival „Renaissance", starting on 18 April, will invite visitors to experience the rebirth of millions of blossoms up close.
As Mother's Day approaches, coinciding with the peak of the tulip bloom, the estate invites you to celebrate mothers in a special way - to admire the millions of blossoms that every mother deserves. In the evening, visitors will be treated to a special Mother's Day concert, which will be a cosy and meaningful culmination of the celebration.
