It survived empires and wars, but not market pressures: after 143 years, a legend of the German meat industry is closing down

Another historic company is ceasing operations in the German meat industry. In the town of Halberstadt, in the state of Saxony-Anhalt, “Halberstädter Konserven GmbH”, which has been in operation since 1883, is ceasing trading. The closure will affect around 150 employees.

The company’s history began in 1883, when “Heine & Co.“ was founded in Halberstadt. In 1896, the production of tinned sausages began here, which eventually became one of the region’s best-known food industry products. Following German reunification, in 1992, the company was taken over by the Nitsch family.

In recent years, the company has faced rising energy, raw material and labour costs, intense competitive pressure and financial difficulties. In April 2026, the owners announced that they were seeking an investor or buyer capable of taking over production and ensuring the continuity of operations, but were unable to find a suitable solution.

Production was halted at the beginning of June, and insolvency proceedings were subsequently initiated. The company’s options for restructuring were limited, partly due to the need for additional investment in production infrastructure.

The “Halberstädter Würstchen” brand may survive, as the rights to it belong to the owners’ family. In future, it may be sold or production could be continued by another manufacturer, but it is not yet clear whether an investor will come forward.

The closure of the Halberstadt factory reflects wider changes in the German meat industry. Production is becoming increasingly concentrated within the sector, whilst smaller and regional producers are facing rising costs and competition from large companies. In 2026, other companies in the German meat industry also announced plant closures and job cuts.

The company, which had been in operation for more than 140 years, survived two world wars, the division of Germany and changes in economic systems, but ultimately could not withstand the current market and financial challenges.
