Elk hunting quota reduced

The Ministry of the Environment has set a hunting quota of 3,935 elk for the 2026–2027 hunting season.

During this and the previous hunting seasons, the quota was 4,300 elk. They are the only hoofed game animals for which hunting is subject to quotas in Lithuania.

Elk hunting quotas in each municipality are set by that municipality’s Commission for the Setting of Game Animal Hunting Quotas, comprising representatives from the Department of Environmental Protection, specialists from the State Forest Service, and representatives of organisations uniting private forest and land owners, as well as hunting clubs and associations. The total hunting quota for these animals is approved by order of the Minister for the Environment on the basis of data submitted to the Ministry of the Environment and compiled in the Biodiversity Information System.

The highest hunting quota for elk has been set in Švenčionys District Municipality (214), Varėna District Municipality (205) and Ignalina District Municipality (201).

Male elk may be hunted from 15 August to 15 December; females – from 1 October to 30 November, and fawns – from 1 October to 31 January.
