Potato prices are rising rapidly in the Netherlands and Germany: a drought has unexpectedly reduced supply

Until very recently, there was talk in Europe of a potato surplus, and prices were extremely low. However, the situation has changed abruptly – due to the prolonged drought and heatwave, a significantly lower harvest is forecast in many growing regions.

The German press notes that the Netherlands, Belgium and parts of Germany – where potatoes are grown for the production of chips – have been particularly affected. Processing companies fear a shortage of raw materials, which is why spot market potato prices have soared several times over in a short space of time.

However, the final prices of potatoes and chips in shops will depend on the main autumn harvest. If more rain falls in the near future and the harvest turns out to be better than currently forecast, the rise in prices may slow down. However, if the drought continues, potatoes and potato products may become even more expensive for consumers.

According to market experts, the current price surge shows how quickly weather conditions can change the agricultural produce market – just a few months ago there was a surplus of potatoes, but now supplies are becoming limited.
