Fusarium and new harvests. Farmers are already raising questions (VIDEO)
This year, Lithuanian grain growers have faced a new “discovery” – fusarium – and yet another reason to apply deductions for wheat purchased. And the new grain sub-classes introduced last year have further expanded this “arsenal of tools”.
Has the whole of Lithuania really suddenly been struck by fusarium? And to what extent do such requirements actually determine the price farmers are paid for their grain?
Jolanta and Martynas Grey, farmers in the Kaišiadorys district, have chosen a different path this season – to apply practically nothing extra to their fields, despite almost daily calls from managers and recommendations to spray the wheat with one product or another.
Did this decision pay off? What were their fields, harvest and grain quality like? And what does their experience reveal about the increasingly frequent suggestions farmers receive to “definitely spray something else”?
In this “Agrobitė Play” report – on fusarium, grain sub-classes, deductions, managers’ recommendations and what actually happens on the farm when market demands are constantly changing.
