Third of a kilo – that's how much food waste the average European Union (EU) resident throws away every day. Food waste is a major problem – the EU generates 59 million tonnes of food waste every year, and the aim is to halve this amount by 2030. In addition to promoting responsible consumption and proper waste segregation, technologies used by food manufacturing companies are also key to tackling food waste. Here's how they help to use raw materials more efficiently and safely recycle leftover food back into production.Mantinga

„Food waste is not just a household problem. With more than a quarter of food waste estimated to come from the production and processing of food, the focus is also turning to the producers. More and more producers are rethinking traditional production models and adopting innovative solutions, not only to improve operational efficiency but also to reduce the loss of raw materials during production. We are no exception – we have implemented and successfully used a number of proven solutions“, – shares Domantė Lubytė, Sustainability Project Manager at „Mantinga“, the largest producer of bread, snacks and frozen products in the Baltic States.

„Mantinga“ collects up to 35 tonnes of crumbs every month and puts them back into production. Last year alone, it recycled 280 tonnes of crumbs.

The crumbs are produced during the manufacturing process of buns for French hot dogs – the drilling of the cavity into which the sauces and sausages are then placed in the supermarket. The resulting crumbs are returned to the dough preparation area and added to the dough of other similar products.
