Hunters help to detect a poacher who hunted a deer fawn in Anykščiai district
January 14. On 14th of June, the officials of the Department of Environmental Protection in Anykščiai district, Zabelyne village, found a person catching a red deer fawn in a prohibited manner (with a snare).The damage to the wildlife resources amounted to 5 101,12 euro and will be subjected to administrative liability.
Environmental officers, after receiving a report from hunters of a possibly illegally hunted red deer fawn, promptly went to the scene of the incident and launched an investigation, during which it was established that a resident of Zabelyne village had hunted in a prohibited manner, using snares. The environmental officers found all the evidence of the offence and the citizen confessed that he had set a metal rope snare to catch a red deer fawn, gutted the fawn and took part of the carcass home by wheelbarrow. He left the rest in the woods at the scene of the hunt.
The use of traps to catch wild animals is not only illegal, but also causes great suffering to the animals – the animal is distracted and circles around trying to get free, until it finally dies.
An administrative offence report has been drawn up under Article 290(5) and (7) of the Code of Administrative Offences of the Republic of Lithuania for breaches of the rules on hunting in the territory of the Republic of Lithuania. The carcass of the illegally hunted animal, a noose, a knife and a wheelbarrow were also seized. The offender faces a fine of between €800 and €1,800 and will have to pay compensation for the damage caused to game resources of €5,101.12.
