We tried to destroy your crops (VIDEO)

„The sky is falling“ is the first impression when a downpour, hailstorm or storm devastates the crop fields. Is this true – scientists this week presented research on the extent to which plants are able to regenerate after being struck by meteorological events.

„The damage that plants suffer depends on many things: how developed they are, the environmental conditions before and after the weather event, so it is very important to look at the damage at different stages of plant development in the Lithuanian climate“," said Dr Ona Auškalnienė, a researcher at the Institute of Agriculture, Lithuanian Agricultural and Forestry Science Centre (LAMMC).

Accurate assessment of crop damage caused by natural disasters is important for both farmers and crop insurers. That is why, for several years now, LAMMC scientists have been conducting experiments to simulate disaster damage to fodder bean crops (they have previously studied oilseed rape crops) and to observe how beans recover from various levels of damage.
