I.Hofmanas: Lithuania could export eggs to the USA, but it's difficult

Lithuania could export eggs to the US, but it would be difficult due to high costs, Agriculture Minister Ignas Hofmanas said.

„The ministry would be in favour of exports as long as our producers have something to offer. We would try as soon as possible to get the formalities sorted out, because we need a permit (from the US FDA – BNS) to export," Hofman told reporters at the Cabinet on Wednesday.

„The ministry is certainly in favour, but we have to assess whether we have eggs that we need to export“, – stressed the minister.

The US Embassy in Warsaw has asked Lithuanian businesses for information on possible exports of eggs to the United States, the vz.lt portal reported.

Lithuania has already briefly exported eggs from the US in 2015, according to Mr Hofman: "It is possible to export eggs, it has happened before, but it is quite complicated. It means that the costs go up.

„Businesses often do not like contracts that are short term“, – added the Minister.

According to him, Lithuania currently exports egg whites and egg powder to the US.

BNS previously reported that in September 2022, the US allowed imports of Lithuanian egg products – egg white and yolk flour, frozen or dried egg mass. Lithuania then became the second European Union country, after the Netherlands, to receive such a permit.

The company „Baltic Egg Production“ of the „Groward Group“ in Plungė was interested in exporting these products to the USA.
