Today is International Veterinary Day

Veterinary medicine is more than a profession. Few people know that veterinarians are not just working in clinics or on farms – many of them are doing invisible, but very important work on a national, societal and even international scale.

For example, government veterinarians working for the VMVT are involved in animal health and welfare policy making, carrying out risk assessments, ensuring food safety from farm to fork, and overseeing compliance with animal welfare standards. They also cooperate with international organisations and contribute to the prevention and control of communicable diseases.

In contrast, veterinarians, who are more familiar to the public and work privately, have an important mission: they treat animals, provide advice to keepers and businesses, engage in educational activities, get involved in animal protection projects, and actively contribute to animal welfare.

On the occasion of World Veterinary Day, we extend our warmest congratulations to all those who are part of this wide-ranging and extremely important profession: doctors, teachers, students, scientists and all those who contribute every day to the well-being of animals and people.
