US beekeepers trying to recover from a disastrous year
In the US media, beekeepers are sounding the alarm bells. Between June 2024 and March this year, beekeepers lost about 1.6 million colonies, or 62% of their hives, according to a national survey of beekeepers conducted by „Project Apis“.
If these trends continue this season, according to Harry Vanderplool, a beekeeper on the west coast of Oregon, the consequences for the entire beekeeping business could be catastrophic. But if the beekeepers rebuild their hives and relocate their colonies, it will take at least a year for the situation to return to normal.
Former Oregon State Beekeepers Association president Harry Vanderplool‘says last season was the worst he can remember. It's even worse than 2006, when the term "colony collapse disorder" was coined.
According to the reader, the average loss is about 50%.
