The Parliament adopts a resolution on forest policy, setting out Parliament's views on long-term sustainable forest policies. The Parliament's resolution is a non-legislative act aimed at confirming in writing the Parliament's position on a matter of national importance.

„We can say that the National Forest Agreement, initiated at the beginning of the term, which brought together 400 people for a wide-ranging discussion, has happened. It was not only the leaders of the political parties who put their signatures on it, but the majority of the Members of the Seimas who voted in favour of the Resolution on Forest Policy, and part of the National Forest Agreement was translated into concrete amendments to the Forest Law. The draft Forest Law has already been approved by the Government and will be discussed in the Seimas in the near future," said Simonas Gentvilas, Minister of the Environment.

The document submitted by Aistė Gedvilienė, Chair of the Environment Committee of the Seimas, together with other parliamentarians, reaches agreement on 6 topics. Agreement was reached on the development of forest-related science and training systems; the relationship between private ownership and the public interest; openness of the forest sector, better public information and involvement in decision-making; the creation of stable and climate-resilient forests, increased carbon storage and forest cover; the identification and enhancement of the socio-cultural value of forests; and the creation of attractive employment opportunities in the forest-based sector, social security and protection for workers.

The challenges of climate change and biodiversity, and society's changing needs for the country's forests have prompted a fundamental review of Lithuania's forest policies, and the Ministry of Environment had initiated the National Forest Agreement as early as 2021, with the aim of agreeing on a long-term sustainable forest policy direction and responding to the issues raised by different interest groups.

The National Forest Agreement was drafted by around 40 different organisations and almost 400 participants. The document was discussed at 150 events in various formats and the final text of the agreements was shaped by nine thematic groups, of which six were able to reach agreement. The latter have been translated into the resolution "On forest policy" adopted today by 72 votes in the Seimas.
