Slovak University of Agriculture breaks the record for harvested area (VIDEO)

A company owned by the University of Agriculture in Slovakia set a new national record during the harvest on 12 July, with a harvested area of 111.4 metres at one time. Thirteen combine harvesters harvested wheat in one plot. The University announces that this record will be included in the Slovak Book of Records.

Among modern combine harvesters, a 1993 „John Deere“ combine harvester was also involved in the achievement of the record, according to the university. Together, they harvested Genius wheat on a plot 300 metres wide and 800 metres long.

"We considered this plot to be the culmination of our harvesting work and the crops were grown using soil-conserving, non-farming technology. The idea of the company is to do experiments for which there is no time space and often not even the machinery on conventional farms", said Pavol Findura, the event organiser.

According to Mr Findura, the records are aimed at promoting agriculture to the general public, and in particular at showing young people that agriculture is a segment that is permeated by all the latest technologies and that it needs highly qualified staff with sufficient knowledge and experience to manage it.

„Of course, the working width of the machine is important for farmers - the larger the working width, the faster, more efficiently and more cheaply a field can be harvested,“ the university said in a statement.

When it comes to grain yields in Slovakia, rapeseed yields, for example, have exceeded expectations compared to growers in neighbouring countries. The average yield in the country was 3.6 tonnes per hectare. However, the best results, at least for the University itself, came from winter wheat, with an average yield of 7.15 tonnes per hectare.

The yield of spring barley varied depending on the location: for example, in Kolíňany it was 4.9 tonnes per hectare and in Oponice it was 5.4 tonnes.
