Bluetongue: third case recorded in Poland

VMVT nuotr.

Blue tongue disease (BTD) is on the rise in Europe. On 23 December. A third outbreak was recorded in Poland, near the coast. The aphids that spread this dangerous disease transmit the virus when they bite, and the warm winter conditions allow them to survive and spread even in the off-season.

MLD is dangerous for ruminants such as sheep, cattle, goats, llamas and deer. Symptoms, particularly severe in sheep, can include fever, swelling of the head and neck, lameness, inflammation of the mouth, nose and eyes. Although cattle are often more easily affected, they can become carriers of the virus and infect other animals.

The spread of the disease also poses a risk to Lithuania. The contagion can be spread through infected animals or through transported animals. Livestock keepers are advised to ensure biosecurity, to remove manure on time (at least once a week), to plug leaks, to drain wet areas and to monitor the condition of animals. If suspicious symptoms are observed, immediate contact should be made with specialists.

Lithuania has a passive FMD surveillance system, i.e. any suspicion of FMD is followed by tests to confirm the diagnosis of the disease, and in addition, from 2025, Lithuania will have an active FMD surveillance system in the border regions with Kaliningrad, Belarus and Poland to ensure early detection of the disease.

Livestock keepers are urged to be vigilant and to report immediately any suspicion of the disease on their farm. Only a joint effort can ensure effective prevention and control of the disease.
