How to decorate your yard and garden for Halloween
The ancient pagan Celtic festival of Halloween is celebrated from the evening of 31 October through the night to 1 November. This “invasive” celebration seems to have caught on in Lithuania. Traditionally, the ancient Celts celebrated the end of the summer harvest and the beginning of winter on that night. It is the fear of the approaching winter and the cold that is reflected in Helvin. The changing of the seasons was linked to the struggle between the light and dark forces that govern day and night. The Celts interpreted the coming of winter as the intervention of dark forces and evil spirits. The Celts also believed that the night was the opening of the gates to the afterlife. This is why Halloween is so dominated by images of horror and death.
The main elements of Halloween decorations that can be used to decorate one's own yard, garden, plot and house are traditionally:
• Pumpkins and lanterns made of pumpkins with eye and tooth projections;
• Ghosts and ghosts;
• Skulls;
• Spider figures;
• Spider webs made of woollen yarn, white cord, gauze;
• Bat silhouettes;
• Skeletons, scarecrows.
Yard itself, garden (trees and shrubs), house facade (doors, thresholds and windows) can be decorated.
How to decorate your yard for Halloween
Decorating the yard is a great way to surprise, delight, cheer up and scare your guests. The easiest and most affordable material for yard decoration in autumn – fallen leaves. In autumn, the whole ground is covered with dry, wet leaves, which in themselves are a decoration of the season and give the Halloween celebration an air of mystery. Start collecting autumn leaves at least a week before Halloween.
Collected dead crooked tree branches, painted black, will fit in perfectly with the aesthetics of the festival. They can be placed in outdoor pots to create „bouquets“. Throw a "spider web" made of white woollen thread or torn gauze on top.
It will be great if you hang silhouettes of bats, witches, owls, crows, cats, spiders, skeletons, cut out of black cardboard on the branches.
You can make a large spider web using white polyester rope and stakes to hold the rope. Switch on spotlights or other lights so that guests can see the spider web in the dark.
You can also decorate the yard with ghosts made from old sheets, gauze, old tulle curtains or lightweight synthetic translucent fabrics. To give the fabric the shape you want, wet it with PVA glue and place it on an inflated balloon. When the glue is completely dry, paint the ghost's face on the fabric. The ghost can be hung on tree branches. Even more fun, make several ghosts and place them in a row or circle on your front lawn.
For a Halloween party, temporarily turn your backyard into a "graveyard". Set up a few crooked crosses, maybe even a skeleton trying to crawl out of the ground. You will need to buy a life-size (human height) skeleton from specialised holiday shops online.
How to decorate your garden for Halloween
The garden will be dominated by older trees, tall shrubs and climbing plants, on which all the trappings of Halloween can be hung.
Bat silhouettes would be the best way to hang bats from trees. For a realistic look, turn the silhouettes upside down – then guests will think the bats are sleeping. You can also hang fake ghosts on trees. For this, it is recommended to cover the tree's crown with cobwebs or white sheets and bedding to give the impression of a real ghost, especially if the ghost is moved by the wind.
Drop fake spider webs and glowing spiders on shrubs, on large garden stones, on rockeries, as if they were taking over the garden. Make mystical lighting with blue, purple, green chandeliers.
Pumpkins and lanterns for Halloween
The pumpkin – the main attribute of Halloween, which can be used to make not only the traditional decoration of the festival – a chandelier or a lantern, but also a wide range of other decorative elements and installations. The easiest option – to place pumpkins all over the yard or at the entrance of the house. Don't forget about fire safety when using such pumpkin lanterns.
Creating pumpkin lanterns can take a bit of work. The pumpkin is cut from the inside, the flesh is removed and a funny or sinister face with eyes and teeth is cut out of one side of the pumpkin. A simple paraffin candle is placed inside the empty pumpkin.
If you don't want to waste time on pumpkins, make themed lanterns out of tins. Tins and jars of all sizes are suitable. You can cut out eyes and a toothy mouth from the cans. You can paint the jar or can orange, or the inside of the candle can be left unpainted.
A larger quantity of pumpkins can be used to make a Halloween scarecrow with a hat on its head using your imagination.

Spiders are a useful option for garland. To add to the festive atmosphere, garlands made of spiders can be created. Simply place toy spiders in jars, attach the garland bulb to the jar lids. And for a Halloween party, garlands made of small glowing pumpkins with faces hanging in the yard will look beautiful.
