Coalition plans to reduce VAT on fruit and vegetables
After the three-party coalition agreement between the Social Democrats, Nemunas Aušra and the Democratic Union "In the Name of Lithuania" was agreed on Saturday, it becomes clear what economic changes the country's population can expect in the next four years.
The key decisions include taxing the highest incomes at progressive rates regardless of their type, reforming the second pillar of pensions by increasing the saver's right to dispose of the accumulated funds and involving employers, but on certain issues, such as the delisting of "Ignatius", the future rulers do not have a common understanding.
The coalition agreement also provides for a reduction in value added tax (VAT) on fruit and vegetables, but there is no agreement on a reduced VAT rate for the catering sector. With the Social Democrats saying that a reduction might be needed, „Vardan Lietuvos“ doubts whether it is possible today, while „Nemunas aušra“ says there are better ways to address the woes of the catering sector.
Among others, Remigijus Žemaitaitis, the head of „Nemunas dawn“, also highlighted the restoration of economic and political relations with China as one of the priorities for the next four-year period.
„Rebuilding economic and political relations with China is very important for us“, – said R. Žemaitaitis.
Gintautas Paluckas, leader of the Social Democrats, who has been named as the next prime minister, has also said that bilateral contact with Beijing should be improved.
