This week, the State Food and Veterinary Service (SVVT) discussed with representatives of the Turkish authorities the possibilities of exporting Lithuanian lamb to Turkey. According to the Turkish representatives, Lithuania is currently an attractive country for importers due to its stable situation regarding contagious diseases in cattle.

„We are doing our utmost to maintain our status as a country free from contagious diseases dangerous to cattle. As outbreaks of serious communicable diseases are recorded in neighbouring countries, the VMVT continuously communicates to livestock keepers the importance of biosecurity and responsible care and movement of livestock. We encourage farmers to set an example to the world and to create a society of responsible, inquisitive people who seek opportunities and knowledge to protect their animals from the risk of disease. We are ready to advise, assist and provide the necessary information in all matters," urges Vaidotas Kiudulas, Chief Veterinarian of the VMVT of the Republic of Lithuania.

Although Lithuania was previously authorised to export beef, but after a prolonged absence of trade, Turkey is seeking to reassert the credibility of its state controls and renew its authorisation to export beef. The Turkish delegation visited the VMVT to enquire about the reliability of Lithuania's state control system, which is a key factor in ensuring the safety and security of exported products.

„Lithuania is already known in Turkey as a reliable supplier of food products, as Lithuanian exports - from fish to dairy and egg products - meet the highest quality and safety standards. We hope that with the renewed opportunities to export Lithuanian beef, we will be able to further strengthen this relationship and contribute to the growth of mutual trade," commented Audronė Mikalauskienė, Head of the VMVT.

In 2024, Lithuania exported more than 114 tonnes of fish products and more than 121 tonnes of dairy products to Turkey, mainly ice cream and canned dairy products. In addition, more than 6 tonnes of egg products were exported to Turkey, while the total export of Lithuanian animal products to Turkey amounted to almost 250 tonnes.

Lithuanian producers are also successfully exporting beef to other countries, including Georgia, Ukraine, the Netherlands, Germany, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Turkey is expected to become an important new partner in this area.
