Pasvaliets village fires - suspect free, people talk of lynching trial
Guns in Pasvaliete village frightened people as the local resident who may have caused them raged with impunity. In addition to setting fire to homesteads, locals say he also watered their yards with slurry, drove his car at night with the headlights off, knocked over a cross... The suspect was arrested and the villagers breathed a sigh of relief, but it turned out that he was on the loose again.
Initiative taken by an elder
Pačeriaukštė elder Aurimas Frankas took the initiative – on Friday, he invited the residents of the village of Pasvalietis to a meeting to talk about how to make their village safer. This step was also supported by the village elder Virginijus Šamšonas. The meeting was also attended by Indra Lapėnienė, the deputy elder, officers from the Biržai District Police Commissariat, and specialists from the Biržai Fire and Rescue rescue service. Elder V. Šamšonas said that he could not remember a time when so many people had gathered; almost 40 villagers had come.
„Of course it is relevant. How long can we live in fear? And having not seen the elder for a long time, this will be an opportunity to talk“,- said the elderly women of Pasvalie village.
The police were the most angry, with Sandra Timukienė, head of the Biržai District Police Commissariat's Operations Division, and Vilma Kairytė, the chief investigator, having to explain to the public why it took so long to apprehend the village arsonist. The people present poured out their grievances and were angry about why such disasters had been expected, even though people had complained about the dangerous behaviour of one of the inhabitants in the past.
