Does the tractor have to retract? Conflict on Lithuanian roads
"Reid Official" A real-life case shared on the channel sparked a heated debate: a slow-moving tractor was creating a traffic jam, with more than 30 cars behind it. Should the driver have stopped and passed the faster ones? Is this a violation of traffic rules or just a lack of road infrastructure and patience?
What does the law say?
Article 113 of the Lithuanian Road Traffic Regulations states:
A driver travelling significantly slower than the speed limit (except when turning left or turning around) shall give way to following vehicles travelling faster than the speed limit by keeping as far to the right as possible. Drivers of slow-moving or bulky vehicles must stop and, if necessary, give way to following vehicles.
In theory, the rule is simple. In practice, it is complex – narrow roads, continuous lines and lack of safe shoulders often make it difficult or dangerous to stop.
Social media reactions: a storm of opinion
The incident has provoked a range of reactions from drivers:
„If there's a queue, let them pass!– some argued that it is the duty of the slower driver to let traffic through.
„Where is he supposed to go?“ – others pointed out that there are no safe places to stop.
„Impatience is the real problem“ – some blamed a culture of driver aggression and intolerance.
„Human decency is also important“ – commentators urged people to show understanding rather than just quote the law.
Infrastructure mistakes: drivers caught between rules and reality
Most drivers of slow-moving vehicles face a common problem – there is nowhere safe to stop. Despite legal requirements, narrow roads without shoulders or designated parking spaces make it almost impossible to comply. Even if there are rest areas, they can be several kilometres apart.
How many cars form a "queue"?
There is no precise legal definition, but many drivers agree that if there are 5-6 cars waiting, the driver should start looking for a safe place to pass them. In this case, there were reportedly more than 30 cars behind the tractor-trailer – but no action was taken.
Culture or chaos? Emotional outbursts reign online
Dejay, the online debate has not remained civil. The comment thread quickly escalated into personal insults, sexist remarks and aggressive taunts. This highlights a deeper problem – emotional immaturity and lack of respect are more prevalent than legal ignorance.
„Of course a tractor can't go faster. But the driver could at least stop when it is possible. He's not the only one on the road.
Conclusions and recommendations
Slower vehicles should make every effort to pass faster vehicles – when it is safe to do so.
Road infrastructure should be improved with more stopping zones and clearer signage.
Drivers' patience and respect is paramount – it is not only laws but also attitudes that shape road safety.
What do you think?
Should tractors always stop regardless of safety? Are laws enough, or should we focus more on road design and empathy? Share your thoughts in the comments!
