Milk prices in Germany surpass 60 cents per kilo

Milk prices in Germany have started to rise sharply as the country's processors face a shortage of raw materials, according to media reports. While the increase has so far been seen in transactions between dairies, it should inevitably lead to an increase in the market for direct payments to farmers.

Rabobank predict that the shortage of raw materials will force dairy processors to increase the purchase price of raw milk as well, and that dairy producers can expect prices as high as 60 cents per kilogram.

According to the European Commission, the average farm-gate milk price in Germany in August was €0.463/kg. In Lithuania, the price was €0.396/kg.

„Many farmers were already enjoying rising milk prices last month. The 50 cent threshold is within reach again," &bdash; &bdash; said „Rabobank“ in a report.

Analysts say the upward trend in milk farm gate prices should continue as raw milk is in short supply. Farmers in Germany delivered less raw milk to dairies last week, if statistics are to be believed.
