Latvians have started complaining on social media that it was impossible to buy butter from supermarket shelves in some places in November. However, this situation did not last long, as traders tried to import more, albeit at a higher price.

Latvian dairy processors themselves deny the problem of butter shortages, but a similar situation has arisen in Estonia. The country ran out of butter in August.

milk production was severely curtailed at the time due to unfavourable weather conditions.

Milk production in the Baltic States fell due to drought in some regions. Cows have suffered from heat stress, which has reduced milk yields.

Among others, dairy farms in Latvia are shrinking rapidly.

Similar butter shortages were recorded in 2017.
