On an organic farm, wolves slaughter sheep almost daily. There is nothing the farmer can do (VIDEO)
In the village of Buitūnai, in the district of Utena, wolves have been slaughtering sheep on an organic farm without any respite, and the farmer is at a loss as to what he can do to stop the attacks of the greys.
„Since 8 July, the sheep have been mowed almost every day, with a 2-3 day break. In total, more than 30 units have been cut.“, – the Lithuanian Sheep Breeders' Association raised the alarm on social media on Tuesday, along with a short video of the owner of the organic farm addressing the head of the LAAA, Gintaras Kisielienė.
According to the association, neither an electric shepherd nor dogs can protect a farmer from wolves.
"Va, Gintar, look. Here are the sheep, and here is the house. Sheep (wolves are sheep) here, here in this place"," the farmer complains to the head of the Association of Lithuanian Sheep Breeders, G. Kisieliene.
The pasture and the farmer's house are separated only by a narrow road. Obviously, it is already unsafe even for humans, when wolves are completely unafraid of humans.
„Ungulates are plentiful in Lithuania, food for wolves is plentiful! Sheep feed mostly at night in the summer because it is hot during the day, locking them in sheds makes them suffer and damages their well-being! Organic farms are required to graze their sheep on pasture!“ – a closed circle from which farmers are finding no way out, says LAAA.
„Agrobite“ reminds that wolf hunting is limited. It is allowed from 15 October until 15 March.
The hunting of problem wolves requires a permit from the environmental authorities, but these procedures take time to go through the bureaucratic mechanism.
