Germany saw a sharp increase in imports of medical cannabis last year

German imports of cannabis for medical and scientific purposes rose sharply in 2024, almost quadrupling in quarterly volume, the Federal Institute for Medicinal Products and Medical Devices (BfArM) reported on Thursday.

Cannabis imports rose from 8.1 tonnes in the first quarter to 11.6 tonnes in the second quarter, from 20.7 tonnes in the third quarter to 31.7 tonnes in the fourth.

In total, more than 72 tonnes of dried cannabis flowers have been imported for medical and scientific purposes in 2024, the agency said. In comparison, around 2.6 tonnes of cannabis was produced for these purposes in Germany alone in the same period, the BfArM told dpa.

The annual quantity was defined several years ago for a four-year period through an allocation procedure, the institute added.

BfArM did not specify the reasons for this sharp increase.

Since April last year, adults in Germany have been legally allowed to consume cannabis for non-medical purposes, but with a number of restrictions.

Private homes are allowed to grow up to three plants and store up to 50 grams of cannabis. In addition, non-commercial „cultivation associations“ with a licence are allowed to collectively cultivate cannabis for the use of their members.
