Beijing announced on Wednesday that it is launching an investigation into European Union subsidies on some dairy products exported to China.

The announcement comes a day after the bloc said it plans to impose import duties of up to 36% on Chinese electric cars for five years.

„The Ministry of Commerce has decided to initiate an anti-subsidy investigation on imported dairy products of relevant origin in the European Union from 21 August 2024, – the ministry said in a statement on its website.

The investigation will cover imported dairy products, including fresh cheese and cottage cheese, mouldy cheese, some milk and cream, the ministry said.

The study will look at a wide range of subsidies under the European Union's Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and should be completed within a year. However, the possibility has been left open to extend the study by half a year.

The European Commission (EC) said on Tuesday it plans to impose import duties of up to 36% on Chinese electric cars for five years unless Beijing offers an alternative solution to end the dispute over state subsidies.

Last month, Brussels imposed heavy temporary import duties of up to 38% on Chinese electric cars, on top of the 10% duties currently in force, after an investigation into subsidies found that they unfairly disadvantaged European competitors.

The dairy investigation will be one of a number of Chinese investigations into the EU's trade practices, including an anti-dumping investigation launched in June on pork imports.
