A forest was recorded entering Lithuania via the Nemunas River at the border with Belarus, in the municipality of Druskininkai, reports the State Border Guard Service (SBGS).

According to the SBGS, on Wednesday, close to 11 p.m., officers of the Kapchiamiescis border guard station spotted a bear through the video surveillance system monitoring the border with Belarus along the middle of the Nemunas River and its approaches to the border. The spot is located near the village of Gerdašiai in Druskininkai municipality.

According to the border guards, the bear waded into the river in the dark on the Belarusian bank and started swimming. After crossing the state border in the Nemunas and crossing a river more than fifty metres wide, it landed on the Lithuanian bank and headed towards the forest.

Lithuanian border guards have recently seen the bears in or near the districts of Varėna, Švenčionys and Vilnius.
