The CAP House of Cards collapses. Farmers and the Minister took part in the action (VIDEO)
On Tuesday, a symbolic CAP house of cards collapsed in front of the European Union's representation in Vilnius, Lithuania, as part of an action by Copa-Cogeca, an EU-wide organisation of farmers (of which the Lithuanian Farmers' Union is a member), against the government, which is supposed to distribute the funds of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) to the farmers in a fair way.
„Brussels is discussing the agricultural budget that will be poured into the overall subsidy for EU member states. This means that the countries themselves will decide what proportions of the budget to allocate to their own farmers," Martynas Puidokas, vice-chairman of the Lithuanian Farmers' Union (LFA), said, adding that "we understand that in Lithuania there would certainly be those who would use the previous agricultural money for "environmental protection", for roads, or for some other devil's game."
In this case, he said, the old EU countries would move further away from Lithuania and competitiveness would fall.
The symbolic action is intended to show that what happens when one budget card brings down the house of cards.
„If this happens, food prices will undoubtedly rise, the quality of food itself will deteriorate and its availability will decrease“, – said M. Puidokas, Vice-Chairman of the Lithuanian Union of Farmers (LŪS).
The Minister of Agriculture Ignas Hofmanas also attended the symbolic campaign.
