Belgian giant wins European Pumpkin Championship
Belgian farmer Mario van Geel wins the European Pumpkin Weighing Championships in Ludwigsburg, Germany, with a 1,152 kg giant pumpkin.
In second and third place were pumpkins grown in Germany, weighing 997.5 and 949.5 kg respectively.
Belgian M. van Geel has already won the European Championship in 2019. The event is the annual weigh-in of the continent's biggest pumpkins at the Pumpkin Fair in Ludwigsburg. Producers from Germany, Poland, Austria, Switzerland, France and Belgium take part.
The giant pumpkins are traditionally carved at the end of the exhibition or turned into works of art at the carving festival on 20 October.
This year, the new Belgian champion will not suffer the same fate. He will be sent back to his home country to take part in the next competition.
