More good news from the global market for dairy farmers
The dairy market continues to celebrate good news – the global market continues to appreciate dairy products, which means that the farm gate price of raw milk is set to rise.
According to the results of the last trading session of the "Global Dairy Trade" (GDT) dairy trading floor, the GDT index rose by another 1.2% – to 1254 points.
This is the highest level in almost 2.5 years (5 July 2022. The GDT Index stood at 1,287 points.
Lactose (+7.7%) and wholemeal flour (+4.1%) were the most expensive products in the last trading session, but all other products declined.
Butter (-5.2%), Mozzarella and Cheddar cheeses (-4.5% and -3.2%, respectively) showed the largest price decreases. Butter flour (-2.6%) also fell.
While on the one hand it might seem that the GDT index should be falling as commodity prices fall, the last trading session saw very little trading in both Mozzarella and Cheddar cheeses.
Almost half of all trade was in whole milk flour. So there are indeed opportunities for optimism.
The increase in the GDT index is not only due to the festive period, but also to the seasonality of milk production.
The „Global Dairy Trade“ trading floor is owned by the agricultural cooperative „Fonterra“. Trends in the Oceania area will reach Europe in about 1.5-2 months.
