Milk market: optimism is fading, but it's not over yet
Dairy products have fallen slightly on the global market. In the last trading session organised by the „Global Dairy Trade“ (GDT) on 18 February, the GDT index fell by 0.6% to 1 257 points. Is this the tipping point where dairy products will continue to get cheaper and milk purchase prices will start to fall rapidly? We'll be talking about this on Wednesday's „Agrobite play on the „Youtube“ channel „Ministry of Affairs“, so make sure you subscribe to this free channel so you don't miss out on any important information.
Looking at the results of the last trading session of the GDT, it is evident that the main products – skimmed milk flour (-2.5%) and whole milk flour (-0.6%) became cheaper. Cheddar and Mozzarella cheeses also showed a decrease (-3.4% and -0.1% respectively). Butter, however, appreciated by 2.2% during the trading period.
Lactose (-3.4%) and buttermilk (-0.8%), which are less important contributors to the index, also declined.
After two consecutive sessions of gains, when the GDT index rose by 1.4% and 3.7%, respectively, the latest decline in the index is not critical. The GDT index is expected to rise at least once more in March, after which, as long-term trends show, the index moves into a downward phase until August. During this period, an upward phase is only recorded when optimism prevails in the market after the market rebounds from the bottom. Today, the dairy market is experiencing an upturn, so it is very likely that the GDT index will slowly decline from around mid to late March. We will talk about how this might affect milk prices in the „Ministry of Affairs“ show, so subscribe to the „Agrobite play“ channel.
„Global Dairy Trade“ is owned by New Zealand agricultural cooperative „Fonterra“. Trends in the Oceania area will reach Europe in about 1.5-2 months.
According to the European Commission, according to the average farm gate price of raw milk in January 2025, Lithuania ranked 8th among the other EU countries with a price of €55.44 per 100 kg. The EU average price was €54.30/100 kg.
