Two clear leaders in the Belgian tractor market

The Belgian market for new tractors in 2023 has seen registrations on a downward trend again, but manufacturers and dealers are already seeing positive signs.

According to the Federation of Agricultural and Horticultural Mechanisation (Fedagrim), 1,841 new tractors (over 50hp) were registered in 2023, which is almost 17% lower than the number of registrations in 2022 (2,196 units).

According to Fedagrim, 2021 was an absolute record year for dealers, as demand for tractors increased in the immediate aftermath of the pandemic.

„The downward trend in 2022 and 2023 suggests that the 2021 results were partly market saturation,– says Fedagrim.

„We attribute the second explanation for the downward trend to the legal uncertainty caused by nitrogen hazards. In 2024, we will have to wait and see if the market returns to normal. The atmosphere among farmers at Agribex“ already showed enthusiasm. Whether this will translate into investment will depend largely on how the nitrogen dossier develops. Therefore, as a mechanisation sector, we are looking forward to a legally defined framework“, – says Fedagrim.

In terms of the popularity of brands in Belgium, there are two clear leaders – „John Deere“ and „New Holland“ (with market shares of 22.5% and 19.6% respectively).

Interestingly, „New Holland“ last year failed to return to 2021 figures.

For their part, the „Fendt“, „Deutz-Fahr“ and „Case IH“ brands have been broadly stable.
