Rice prices in Japan jumped 99.2% in June compared with the same month last year, official data released on Friday showed, adding to pressure on Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba ahead of this weekend's elections.

In May, the annual increase in rice prices was even higher at 101 per cent.

Rice prices rose by 98.4 per cent in April compared to the same month last year, and by more than 92.5 per cent in March.
