"IKI stores sold "organic" bars with mycotoxins for a month
Organic production is not always about quality. The State Food and Veterinary Service (SVMVT) found that customers of the IKI supermarket chain were offered to buy organic produce with mycotoxins.
The incident was recorded on 5 December, when mycotoxins were detected in oat fruit bars (carrots, apples and bananas, pack of 6) produced in Switzerland.
Mycotoxin – a harmful chemical compound produced by certain types of mould and fungi. Mycotoxins are relatively stable substances that remain in the product after the death of the moulds that produced them. The most dangerous of the mycotoxins are aflatoxins, which are among the most potent naturally occurring carcinogens.
„There was only one specific batch that was potentially sub-standard, which was removed from the market in November and returned to storage. This batch was only sold for about a month and only in some „IKI“ stores, „Agrobitei“ was told by „IKI“ supermarket chain's Communications Manager G. Kitovė.
