Illegal weapons, fishing gear and vodka in a Telšiai man's warehouse
If a person ignores the rules in one area, they will usually ignore them in another. An obvious illustration of this is the sequence of events involving a 59-year-old resident of Telšiai district.
In early July, the man came to the attention of the Department of Wildlife Protection when he was hunting cormorants with an illegally held smooth-bore rifle near his own water body in the village of Didžioji Palūkscis. The man did so without a permit to keep and carry a gun in an area where he was not allowed to hunt. Although the man did not hunt anything, he was in breach of hunting legislation. As a result, he was subject to administrative proceedings and the illegally kept weapon was handed over to the Telšiai District Police.
It was decided to check whether the man had any more illegally stored weapons. The results of the search showed that the suspicions were confirmed. Two more firearms without names and identification numbers and 108 different cartridges were found in the farmhouse. A pre-trial investigation has been opened against the Telšiai man for illegal disposal of firearms and ammunition.
Officials also found what they were not looking for - 245 bottles of alcoholic beverages of various capacities, not marked with Lithuanian banderole labels, and 40 litres of liquid in plastic containers, emitting the smell of domestic vodka. The man also faces criminal charges for the illegal production and possession of homemade spirits, undenatured or denatured ethyl alcohol, and dilutions thereof.
Another illegal find came under investigation by the officers of the Department of Wildlife Protection – eleven non-amateur fishing gears – set nets not marked with seals in accordance with the established procedure, as well as an unauthorised size of a sail. The man was given an administrative order to pay a fine of €150 for the illegal possession of fishing gear prohibited by law.
