„When we arrived, we saw only a horse's head sticking out of a well full of water, and there was almost no access to it," said Vidmantas Valaitis, the shift commander of the Utena PGT. Apparently, the wooden cover was rotten and the horse got in with its back legs. It was difficult to encircle the 600 kg animal because the well is narrow, and the horse was biting and thrashing its hooves. It was in a sheepfold with a low ceiling, we tried to lift it with a harness, it fell backwards, and we could not tie it up by its legs or head because its body was too heavy. So we lifted it with our hands, with a crane and with a forklift. The rescue operation lasted more than an hour, we had 10 men lifting the plough.“

According to the shift commander, the horse was lying down for a while and stood up: „It was shaking, so I told the owner to put a blanket on it. And when I called the vet, he advised me to cover the horse and lead it so that it wouldn't get pneumonia, because it was not clear how long it had been in the water, maybe overnight, and the owner was away, and had only come to the barn the day before. He says, 'Look, look, there is no horse. Only then did he notice a head sticking out of the well. As far as I know, horses are in very poor health, they are sensitive to everything.

The firefighters in Utena have to rescue animals quite often. They have rescued a cow, a deer that got stuck in a tree, and many a kitten in a tree.
