People spend less in restaurants and more in shops

Retail turnover grew by 3.8% to €14.28 billion in the first 9 months of the year compared to the same period in 2023. 

In September alone, business turnover grew by 4.8% year-on-year to €1.58 billion, up 0.3% from August, the State Data Agency said.

The turnover of restaurants, cafes and other food establishments in January-September was €1.2 billion – down 7.1% on last year. It fell by 0.8% month-on-month and by 6.8% to €138 million in the 12 months to September, compared to September last year. 

The turnover of food retailers grew by 3.7%, non-food by 4.3% and motor fuels by 3% this year. In September alone, compared to September last year, their turnover grew by 4.5% (down by 0.2% month-on-month), grew by 5% (down by 0.2%) and grew by 4.5% (up by 1.8%), respectively. 

Figures are net of the impact of working days and in constant prices.
