Will the Minister for Agriculture stay if the coalition falls?
With Remigijus Žemaitaičius, the chairman of "Nemunas aušra", admitting that his group in the Seimas is considering the possibility of withdrawing from the ruling coalition, questions are being raised about the ministers of the already approved government, who were delegated by the "Nemunas aušra" group.
The Minister of Agriculture from „Nemunas aušra“ is Ignas Hofmanas, the Minister of Environment is Povilas Poderskis, and the Minister of Justice is – Rimantas Mockus.
According to Žemaitis, the group voted unanimously and decided that the majority did not respect the coalition agreement.
„They (considerations to withdraw from the coalition – ELTA) are serious enough. Give us 30 days according to the coalition agreement and you will know our decision," Žemaitaitis told reporters at the Seimas on Tuesday.
„Agrobitė“ recalls that the talk about a possible collapse of the coalition arose after Žemaitaitis announced that he would seek to become the seventh Deputy Speaker of the Seimas, but the Speaker of the Seimas, Saulius Skvernelis, had previously said that Žemaitaitis could only become Deputy Speaker of the Seimas after resolving the legal problems. Žemaitaitis believes that once his legal immunity has been lifted, there is no longer any obstacle to his becoming Deputy Speaker of the Seimas.
A criminal case is currently pending before the Vilnius Regional Court in which Žemaitaitis is accused of incitement to hatred against Jews and publicly endorsing, denying or grossly disparaging international crimes.
Politically interesting question
Political analyst Lauras Bielinis says that "lawyers should explain, maybe even the Constitutional Court". "Because it's a nuance that we haven't encountered before", – says Lauras Bielinis.
In his opinion, if we look at "human logic, they (ministers) should retreat". "Since the group is leaving the coalition, the ministers should leave too", Bielinis said, adding that the situation is politically very interesting.
Legally, he said, it might be possible for ministers to continue working after the coalition collapses, because „they have been confirmed as ministers in corpore“, – L. Bielinis told Agrobitei“.
For his part, Remigijus Žemaitaitis, leader of "Nemunas aušros", asked by „Agrobite“ what would happen with the ministers if the group still pulled out of the coalition, answered laconically. "The ministers are staying," Žemaitaitis said.
