Poland will join EU countries in opposing a free trade agreement with the South American Mercosur countries. "Poland will not support this agreement – the government intends to adopt a resolution to this effect," Defence Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak Kamysz, who is also chairman of the ruling coalition's Valstalice party, said on Friday.

On the sidelines of a meeting with his French counterpart Annie Genevard in Warsaw, Poland's Agriculture Minister Czeslaw Siekierski also confirmed his negative stance on the MERCOSUR agreement. France, which is organising opposition to the agreement, has been particularly vocal in its rejection of the deal due to the dissatisfaction of its farmers.

Negotiations on the agreement have been ongoing for 25 years. An agreement was reached in 2019, but has not yet been ratified. In addition to the discontent of European farmers, critics point to the ongoing deforestation of the Amazon rainforest.

According to Brussels, the agreement could be signed in early December during a summit of Mercosur countries Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay.
