Arabica coffee rises to record prices
„Arabica“ coffee continues to rise in price on the international market, amid concerns about a possible shortage of supply.
According to trade data published by „Trading Economics“, the price of arabica in futures contracts on Tuesday at around 14:00 GMT is expected to rise by around €1.5 billion. Arabic futures traded at USD 3.48 per pound on Tuesday, Lithuanian time. This is the highest price since tracking began in 1972.
Market experts predict that supplies of coffee from Brazil will fall due to the severe drought the country faced earlier this year. There are also concerns about the harvest of the cheaper coffee grade „Robusta“ in Vietnam, which has also been affected by adverse weather conditions, notes „MarketWatch“.
The previous record high price for arabica was recorded in 1977, also due to adverse weather in Brazil.
The USDA forecasts Brazil's coffee crop in 2024–2025 to reach 66.4 million standard 60-kilogram bags, well below previous expectations of 69.9 million.
According to the meteorological service "Cemaden", the current season in Brazil is the driest since 1981.
