Serbian farmers helped topple the Prime Minister. Saturday's protest in Novi Sad (VIDEO)
On Saturday, students and farmers plan to blockade the three main bridges over the Danube in the northern Serbian town of Novi Sad, where the outer roof of the railway station collapsed on 1 November last year, killing 15 people.
This will be the culmination of a three-month protest against the Serbian government and its president, Aleksandar Vucic, who is increasingly leaning towards authoritarian rule.
The real causes of the terrible tragedy were hidden by the authorities and lied to the public. It turned out that the railway tower was to be fully renovated in 2021, but the outer roof itself was never repaired.
The major wave of protests in recent days was triggered by an attack by pro-government thugs when they beat up drama students on 24 January during the daily 15-minute commemoration of the victims of the collapse. Calls for the punishment of the perpetrators soon spread throughout Serbian universities. The students announced that on 28 January they would start a walking march to Novi Sad, some 80 km from the capital.
Farmers were among the first to join the students, blocking roads and accompanying them to Novi Sad. Here, even tables were set up for the young people to eat, and the public support for this action is unprecedented.
The united efforts have already succeeded in bringing down the country's prime minister, Milos Vucevic, who resigned on 28 January, but this is not enough for the protesters.
