Strong price increases for dairy products in a global market
The index of the dairy trading platform "Global Dairy Trade" (GDT) rose by 5.5% to 1146 points in the last trading session. This is the biggest GDT index increase in the last two months, giving new hope to dairy producers who are hoping that milk prices will finally start to increase.
In the trading session held on 20 August, the most expensive commodities were whole milk flour (+7.2%), Mozzarella cheese (+5.0%), buttermilk (+4.8%), skimmed milk flour (+4.0%) and butter (+3.7%). Lactose (+2.7%) and Cheddar cheese fell by 0.2%, while lactose (+2.7%) was 0.2% less expensive.
It is still difficult to say what had the biggest impact on the rise in the GDT index. We need to wait for the next trading session first, which might show which way the market is moving.
The GDT trading platform is owned by the New Zealand cooperative "Fonterra", which is known to have withdrawn from Lithuania.
The trends in the Oceania area will reach Europe in about 1.5-2 months.
