Amsterdam bans meat and fossil energy advertising. From this summer, streets, squares and bus stops, for example, will no longer be able to advertise hamburgers, diesel cars, cruises and air travel. A majority of the city council voted in favour of the ban. According to the city authorities, Amsterdam is the first capital city in the world to ban meat advertising.

One of the initiators of the ban, the Green Party „GroenLinks“, spoke of „an important victory for the climate and public health“.

„Amsterdam no longer has a place for advertising by big companies that contribute to the climate crisis“, said the party's municipal spokeswoman Jenneke van Pijpen.

As early as 2020, Amsterdam wanted to ban so-called "fossil fuel advertising", but this has not been implemented so far.

Bans on advertising services or products that use fossil energy and harm the climate are already in place in other Dutch cities. Meat advertising has not yet been banned.
