Lithuania’s fields are flooded once again: what does this mean for the harvest? (VIDEO)
Lithuanian farmers have once again been confronted with what they least wanted to remember – torrential rain and storms are flooding the fields, crops are waterlogged, and entire “lakes” are pooling in the wheat fields. Is this just a temporary inconvenience, or a new blow to this year’s harvest?
Following a powerful storm, the situation on some of the country’s farms was reminiscent of 2024, when prolonged downpours meant farmers were unable to access their fields for a long time. This year, nature is once again putting them to the test – water is pooling in the crops, there is a risk of crop losses, and farmers are having to assess the damage urgently.
Those farmers who had taken out crop insurance are feeling slightly more at ease, but the natural disaster has not only affected arable farms. Power cuts have caused serious problems for dairy farmers too – some have had to seek unconventional solutions to preserve their produce, and have even had to chill milk in streams due to the power cut.
What is the current situation in Lithuania’s fields? How much of the crop might be damaged? When are farmers due to receive insurance payouts? How is the damage caused by the storm and heavy rain being assessed? Are there any serious problems looming for this year’s harvest?
Gediminas Stanišauskas, editor-in-chief of the „Agrobitė play“ discussed these issues with Martynas Rusteika, head of the crop self-insurance fund “VH Lietuva”, who assessed the situation on Monday evening, after the main storm had passed.
