A bear attacks and injures a runner in Slovakia
A 31-year-old jogger is attacked and injured by a brown bear in a recreation area near Banska Bistrica, Slovakia. This was reported by the Regional Police Directorate.
The incident took place near an observatory on the popular Urpin picnic hill. The man suffered chest injuries but reached the nearby train station on his own and called for help.
The man is being treated in hospital and his health is not in danger. Police have urged residents to exercise caution. The bear is wanted.
According to the latest available data, published in 2022, there are around 1,200 bears living in Slovakia. The animals habitually retreat from people's path if spotted in time. In unexpected encounters, or when females perceive a danger to their cubs, they may attack. There have been fatal incidents in recent years.
