A bear that wandered into the Latvian town of Jekabpils on Sunday has been successfully evicted, Mayor Raivis Ragainis has confirmed.

He revealed that the animal was taken into the forest after dark, after closing the street and creating a corridor for the bear. Drones with infrared cameras were then launched into the air, but they did not detect the bear, which is why it is believed to have disappeared into the woods.

The mayor of Jekabpils stressed that the bear's disappearance from the city was complicated by the high level of public interest, which disturbed the animal.

„Some people complain about the lack of information, but this was done in order not to attract further attention“, – said Ragainis, adding that despite the potentially dangerous situation, residents were prepared to chase, film or photograph the bear.

The beast did not cause any damage and no people were injured.

Bears near other residential areas have been reported to the municipality before. Recently, a moose came to Jekabpils and was also escorted out of the town.

„Nature is nature. We are surrounded by forests, and it is no coincidence that the Sela military training ground has been established in our region, – said R. Ragainis.

A bear wandering in Jekabpils was reported on Sunday. In the evening, the mayor announced that the police were controlling the situation and trying to chase the bear out of the city through loudspeakers.
