Kęstutis Mažeika takes over as head of the Ministry of Agriculture

On Tuesday, the new Minister of Agriculture, Dr Kęstutis Mažeika, was sworn in at the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania. Following the swearing-in ceremony, he officially assumed the duties of Minister of Agriculture.

“The agricultural sector is one of the most important for Lithuania’s economy and its regions. I will strive to ensure that government decisions are geared towards farmers’ competitiveness, stability and a stronger dialogue with the farming community,“ says Minister for Agriculture K. Mažeika.

K. Mažeika has more than a decade of political and professional experience in the fields of agriculture, veterinary science and environmental protection. He served as Minister for the Environment from 2019 to 2020, and chaired the Seimas Committee on Rural Affairs from 2024 to 2025.

Before entering politics, K. Mažeika worked at the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences and the Lithuanian Academy of Veterinary Medicine, where he headed the Career Centres. He holds a PhD in Agricultural Sciences and qualified as a veterinary surgeon at the Lithuanian Academy of Veterinary Medicine.

The new Minister of Agriculture will, first and foremost, focus on strengthening farmers’ confidence, the more effective use of European Union support, and decisions that would increase the resilience and competitiveness of Lithuania’s agricultural sector.
