A family was lost while out mushroom picking with their child. Police used canine experts (VIDEO)

On the evening of 31 July, a family heading into the woods probably did not expect to leave until around midnight, accompanied by a police dog handler and his service dog. At 10.20 pm. A 66-year-old man called the General Emergency Centre to report that he was lost in the forest near the village of Kupriu in Šiauliai district. He was accompanied by a 52-year-old woman and an 11-year-old boy. The trio decided to hike in the evening, but as darkness fell, it became increasingly difficult to find their way back.

Officers from the Šiauliai County Police Special Preparedness Unit and Giedrius Šiškevičius, a cynologist, and his service dog Aru came to their aid. The latter crawled into the dense forest, following the traces of the strays. The colleagues who stayed on the road kept in touch with Giedrius and helped him find his way. Fortunately, the fishermen were found in less than an hour. They were about 1.5 km from the road. After leaving the dense forest, they were immediately handed over to medics for examination.

The man told the officers that he was brave enough to go mushroom picking because he knew the woods and did not think he and his family could get lost.

Know this: this is the kind of argument officers hear all the time from people they find in the middle of the wrong forest. Even if you know the forest, you can still get lost. In practice, changes in weather conditions, time of day, etc., can cause people to get lost in their surroundings.

We advise everyone going into the forest:

• persuade your relatives, especially the elderly, not to go into the forest alone;

• install a mobile app on your loved ones' phones that allows them to see the location of the phone and, if necessary, make it easier to find someone who is lost;

• have a fully charged phone, water, and essential medicines when going into the forest;

• don't go into the forest in the evening, as it becomes harder to find your way around when it gets dark.
