A further €860,000 is being proposed for those affected by frost and heavy rain last year

The Government has allocated a further 860,000 euros in compensation from the state reserve to farmers affected by last year’s frosts and storms.

According to the Ministry of Finance, the damage that led to a national state of emergency being declared last year will be compensated at the same rate as before – 22 per cent of the total damage.    

“As claims for damages can be submitted within three years, local authorities are constantly submitting new applications received from farmers,” – the ministry previously told BNS.

Due to the frost, 12,500 euros would be allocated to Alytus municipality and 11,700 euros to Anykščiai municipality. Meanwhile, due to heavy rain, 37,900 is earmarked for Anykščiai, 293,700 for Biržai, 78,200 for Joniškis, Kelmė – 9,600, Kėdainiai – 34,100, Klaipėda District – 27,400, Kretinga – 110,900, Pakruojis – 36,500, Šilalė – 8,200, Šilutė – 183,600, Telšiai – 15,700 euros.

In February, 40.9 thousand euros were allocated from the state reserve to cover damage caused by heavy rain and frost, and at the end of April – a further 320.5 thousand euros.

It was reported that last year in Lithuania, 4,818 hectares of fruit bushes and berry fields were found to have been damaged by frost, along with a further 9,116 hectares of other agricultural crops and plantations. A total of 17,600 ha of crops and plantations were affected by the prolonged period of rain.

On 1 April this year, the Government lifted the national state of emergency declared last spring and summer due to the impact of frost and prolonged rain on agriculture.
