Unexpected: a bear in Lithuania has given birth to a cub

Lithuanian Hunters and Fishermen Society (LHFS) informs about a bear cub that was spotted in the Mirabelis forest in Kupiškis district by a forester Laimonas Kiaulėnas.

On its FB profile, the LMWD announces that the mother of the bear cub must have been nearby as well.„Until now, it was believed that brown bears do not live in Lithuania permanently, but only occasionally stray from neighbouring countries. However, in recent years bears have been seen more and more frequently in our country," the society said in a statement.

As cameras from hunters, naturalists and border guards are increasingly recording brown bears in Lithuania, it is likely that one other individual is a permanent resident here.

The Lithuanian Hunters' and Fishermen's Association has created a special virtual map to track where bears are or have been in the country. These can be found at: www.meskos.lt or www.meskuzemelapis.lt
